GMDSS VHF Radio Courses
A Prerequisite for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Exam

This one day course requires no prior knowledge and encompasses the full VHF and DSC components of the RYA Radio Course in one day. There are fundamental changes to the operation of marine VHF radio that you should be aware of. Coastguards will not maintain a dedicated listening watch on CH16 after 31 January 2005 and vessels will not have to have a listening watch on Channel 16 after this date..

If you do not hold the RYA VHF certificate enroll on the Capital Sailing one day or two evenings SRC GMDSS course which will qualify you to operate all VHF radios.

Please bring with you:
A passport size photograph. A cheque made payable to the RYA for the assessment for £23

Prior Course Knowledge
This course is aimed for you to safely and knowledgeably use a VHF radio and be able to transmit a distress call in the event of an emergency. The course will cumulate in an assessment your full RYA VHF GMDSSs Radio operator's certificate. Prior to the course we recommend that you read these notes and learn the Phonetic alphabet below:
